A police reconstruction exercise involving accused gangster Akash Singh in West Bengal’s Howrah has triggered political controversy, with allegations emerging that police have begun publicly parading accused criminals in undergarments after the BJP government came to power in the state.
Akash Singh, considered a notorious figure in Howrah’s criminal network, was taken by police on Sunday to multiple alleged crime scenes linked to older cases under investigation.
During the operation, Singh was seen wearing a vest and shorts as police escorted him through different parts of the city under heavy security.
The visuals quickly drew attention because another recent case involving an accused allegedly being paraded in undergarments had already sparked debate over police conduct in the state.
CRIME RECONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY
Police teams from Malipanchghara and Golabari police stations took Singh to several “crime spots” as part of an ongoing reconstruction exercise aimed at revisiting old cases.
Investigators are attempting to determine how the alleged crimes were planned, who may have helped execute them and how the network operated.
According to police sources, the accused was brought back to areas connected to earlier incidents while officers recreated portions of the alleged crimes to verify evidence and examine the sequence of events.
The operation was carried out under tight security arrangements.
MULTIPLE CASES AGAINST AKASH SINGH
Akash Singh has been accused of operating an extortion gang in Howrah and is also facing allegations of opening fire on a police officer.
Police are now revisiting several pending and older cases allegedly linked to him while trying to identify others who may have been associated with the network.
The public appearance of the accused during the reconstruction exercise has now added a political dimension to the investigation, with critics questioning the manner in which accused persons are being presented during police operations.
Further investigation is underway.
